The diet claims that you can shed up to 13lbs in only 2 weeks where a big proportion of this will be the fat that surrounds your belly. It’s no wonder at its announcement that this diet took the world by storm. The claim sounds almost unbelievable.

Fortunately, though, it is the plain reality. Put together originally to assist his heart patients, cardiologist Dr Agatston found out that the side effect of his diet was people started losing weight rapidly. Given its performance, this doctor gave it world-wide publicity.

The core concept at the foundation of this nutritional program does not resemble any other. The diet demands consuming the ‘right’ carbohydrates and fats whilst doing away with the wrong ones. So, what are the right ones? Well, the ones considered beneficial for your health are unsaturated or monosaturated fats and carbs with a low GI (glycaemic index)! To explain this in terms of actual aliments, olive oil should replace butter and pasta or porridge should take the place of potatoes and white bread in your diet.

The rationale for low GI foods is that it is known to supply the body with a gradual supply of energy and therefore you don’t feel hungry quickly as opposed to the alternative where high GI provides you with a quick burst and then you hunger after more and thus, overeat. Therefore, low GI meals are a must for those who are trying to slim.

And yet this is just one of the recommendations put forth with this regime. It has three phases that need to be followed. Let’s review them now:

PHASE 1: Cut down on carbs as much as you can. This means no potatoes, bread, white rice, pasta or sweet foods. You may have a small amount of broccoli and cabbage which are low in GI. At this point, concentrate mainly on having fish, eggs, lean meat, cheese that’s low fat and olive oil on your daily menu. This step spans over two weeks in which, provided you follow the above-mentioned recommendations, you can expect to lose between 8 and 13 pounds.

PHASE 2: Weight loss in this stage will not be as quick as the first two weeks and the time limit for this stage is until you reach your weight loss goals! The average person will now reduce one or two pounds weekly. Low GI foods should make up for the most important part of your nutrition. Low fat milk, pasta, fruit and whole grain cereal are some specific examples that fall into this category.

PHASE 3: You will be required to stay on this phase for life! Since you have shifted to a healthy way of eating, your weight will remain constant. This is your reward for making healthy choices.

A great component to this diet is that there are no portion sizes of limits each day which means you won’t be hungry. Eat three times daily until you are full and snack if you have to with healthy alternatives such as nuts for example.

Like most diets, the first week is the hardest as your body tries to adjust and get used to the change, especially as this involves reducing carbohydrates which typically constitutes a major part of most people’s diet. Unfortunately you will have to rely on willpower to help get you through the first week and note that you probably will feel a little more lethargic than normal as your body adjusts.

You need to know that you’ll lose a large amount of weight only in the first two weeks. The rest of your target will still be achieved, but possibly at a slower rate so ensure that mentally you are prepared for this.

So there you have it. Instead of offering a fast solution that’ll be followed for a limited time, the South Beach Diet should be embraced as a shift of nutritional habits towards healthier choices. It is true, at first you might follow it to get rid of those extra pounds, but ultimately it is all about improving your lifestyle and overall health.
